But how about cost?

Intel or AMD boxes are much cheaper than SunW boxes. Linux is free. I know of one installation where they are replacing DEC Alphas with arrays of linked INTC based Linux boxes.

I know for development you need software tools and programs that run on Linux but with the K7 and Merced coming along, isn't it going to be tempting? Or have people already figured out the performance numbers and concluded that every C programmer needs a Sun workstation on their desk?

Solaris is a great OS, and there doesn't seem to be any motivation to switch to Linux.

I've talked to a couple of people trying to install free Solaris on x86 machines. There is zero support for anything even slightly out of the ordinary. One has abandoned Solaris and is now using Linux.
