Intel Not Acquiring Libit, But Nevertheless Profits
By Eliav Allalouf and Ella Jacoby

In the shadow of the incredible deal, first reported by "Globes", in which Israeli company Libit was sold to giant US communications company Lucent for $250 million, stands another candidate for the purchase, albeit at only $100-$120 million. The other candidate was giant PC chip manufacturer Intel.

In recent years, in its typically modest manner, Intel made ten investments in Israeli start-ups, amounting to $25 million. These investments, even though they were made as part of Intel's long term strategy, proved most successful as venture capital.

Two of them, Libit, sold to Lucent for $250 million, and Butterfly, sold to Texas Instruments for $50 million, are regarded as successes evoking envy in the venture capital sector, since, within a short space of time, they produced fantastic yields of hundreds of percentages.

Yields are nice, they say at Intel, but not the crux of the matter. The target is building a portfolio of investments that expands beyond the traditional field of PCs. Like Lucent and Cisco, Intel is also interested in fighting for leadership of the future fast communications field.

Know anything about Libit? Some claim this is bad news for Broadcom.
