Hi DF, Re: :...The coverage issues are more sensitive with small antannea handsets, etc. Particularly given that you'r broadcasting right next to a microwave absorbing bag of fat and water..."

Now that's not nice, saying that military peoples' heads are bags of fat and water. They have bone in there too you know - they are definitely not soft-headed, or soft-hearted for that matter. Come to think of it, they also have fairly thick skin around that bone and it's usually covered in fur [it sounds like an odd mammalian species].

Globalstar of course will be much better even with the small antennae handsets they'll be using. They are nifty little handsets.

Meanwhile, let's hope ICO cancels their system now that they can see the financial disaster which awaits them. The less talk-time available in space the better at this stage since demand seems lower than anyone expected. Personally, I think demand is sufficient to launch 1000 satellites, but they'll need to be Globalstar ones.

Gee, this didn't sound nice either: "...This forum for Iridium has never had a following of Iridium investers, they go elsewhere because there's no point in dealing with all the raving Globalstar fanatics..." Now I KNOW I'm not a raving Globalstar fanatic, it's just that Globalstar is the most amazing system, designed with incredible foresight, using Qualcomm's 'elegant solution' CDMA technology of superhuman complexity, with prospects to elevate the living standards of humanity.

The point of reading such careful analysis for prospective and actual Iridium investors was to save them their money. Now do you not recall I was advising that Iridium not even be launched in light of Globalstar's imminence and eminence? IRID is now well below the IPO price and must be near book value [though I admit I haven't checked].

Having such soothsayers is a great advantage in SI [usually people post me money in appreciation].

Best wishes,
Maurice

Indoors/Outdoors/Foliage problems

Here's a stupid question: Why can't Iridium provide a phone that plugs into an outdoor/ outside vehicle antenna?

My old Mercedes has an antenna outside that the old-style cellular phone used to be attached too. Worked fine. I prefer my smaller phone, but if I'm a military guy, sticking a two or three foot whip antenna on the back of my zillion-ton tank is no big deal

Same goes for bunkers. I ran cable from inside our bombproof shelters to antennas on the outside to get weather data. Same could be done with Iridium phones. This isn't rocket or satellite science - just wires and pliers stuff. Iridium just needs to provide a jack on the side of their phone.
