As it turns out, (like many people) I own other stocks which have significantly outperformed Intel over the same period.

I've very happy with what I know about the semi industry. I'd say I know more than 99% of the people out there. Certainly more than many analysts covering the industry. Your argument seems to be pretty simple: we should buy Intel because of its superior process technology. But I can think of plenty of examples of companies with superior technology (and superior resources) that have ultimately missed the boat. I can also think of more reasons to buy Intel than just "process technology, duh."
