MAR 30, 1999, M2 Communications - FORE Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: FORE), a leading global supplier of Application Aware? networking solutions, today announced that GTE has chosen FORE's networking products to support its new GTE Intrigue, a turnkey, interactive video information and entertainment system. GTE's interactive services group, a business group within GTE Government Systems Corporation, will bring advanced multimedia services to customers in a wide variety of industries.
GTE Intrigue is an integrated solution built on FORE's resilient networking infrastructure that provides a scalable, high-performance network that meets the demands of interactive applications. The system will deliver a broad array of interactive entertainment and information services, such as video-on-demand, high-speed Internet access, on-line shopping, games and more.
"GTE Intrigue provides an integrated end-to-end solution for those seeking to deploy advanced multimedia applications," said Al Whitmore, vice president of GTE Interactive. "To make this happen, we need a high performance network like FORE Systems' with the bandwidth and intelligence to deliver multimedia services with reliability and precision."
"GTE will bring revolutionary user-friendly access to services for custo mers in a broad range of organisations," said Donal Byrne, senior vice president corporate marketing at FORE Systems. "FORE's intelligent networking products will enable the GTE Intrigue system to deliver a new level of customised information services tailored to customers' interests and needs."
Multimedia Content Supercharged by FORE Equipment
The integrated GTE Intrigue system employs a video server, database server or similar content source linked to users by a network infrastructure built on FORE products, including the ForeRunner? ASX?-1000 backbone switch, ForeRunner ASX-200BX backbone switch and ForeRunnerLE? 25 workgroup switches. Digital television set-top boxes and desktop personal computers are connected directly to the network.
FORE's high-performance networking products enable GTE to scale the Intrigue system as customers' needs grow, along with the size of a facility while maintaining top performance, service quality and capabilities. Because of FORE's advanced networking solutions, video, voice and data can share the single network infrastructure without loss of service quality.
In addition to designing the network and installing infrastructure components, GTE's interactive services group also will acquire and supply custom content appropriate for the systems. For example, a GTE Intrigue system configured for a hotel could include a video server providing guests with video-on-demand with full "VCR-like" control of hundreds of movie selections. The same system could provide patrons with high-speed Internet and e-mail connectivity and access to personalised services, such as local entertainment and restaurant listings.
In developing GTE Intrigue, GTE conducted a successful field trial of an interactive system in the United Kingdom, providing interactive services to homes over a hybrid fibre-coax network.
"This is an excellent example of how FORE's Application Aware networks enable advanced interactive applications to perform with the highest degree of flexibility and scalability," Byrne said.
