Jill N., regarding MSFT Leaps:

I am staying away from them until possibly later in the year. The y2k jitters that this market will endure towards the latter part of this year will provide much greater bargains for LEAPs than at this time. LEAPs will probably be a great play around late November through December '99.

Few of the institutional players are playing LEAPs unless they plan on trading out of them in the short term (two to three months, max). I suggest you play Options in timeframes that are more manageable and stay away from the LEAPs.

Again, it's not that the Market "WILL HAVE Y2K PROBLEMS", its all about the Street deciding that it wants to convince the public that the Market "MIGHT HAVE Y2K PROBLEMS." And considering that I have most of my retirement in stock and don't plan on selling, exposure to LEAPs would be a big mistake. The potential to get burned on LEAPs, for me, is far too high to risk. Unless, of course, you plan on trading LEAPs within a short term horizon.

JMHO, and I am sure t2k may have a differing view.

Re:LEAPS

Buying out of the money Leap calls provides leverage, with a two fold or better return compared to the common. Downside risk exists as well, however, way out of money calls are mostly time value premium which does not decay below a floor. By the same token, the time value in the 2000 leap call premiums should start decaying soon, making the 2001 calls a much better choice. (IMHO)
