John: Why on earth would CPQ want to take on the capital requirements of AMD's chip business, along with fighting Intel?

I don't believe the AMD rumour.

I would have thought the next big acquisition or merger would be in networking: but COMPAQ seems to have backed of networking. So that leaves software.

CPQ could buy AMD and merge it into the to-be-spun-off Internet operations...there the big losses would fit in nicely and probably lead to increased market value.
