Although you're are testing my patience, I will respond briefly for the benefit of all readers -

Do you think an OC-48 or OC-192 rate travels all the way to the end user? Do you have Oc-48 on your desktop? No matter how much data the core requires, it always has to be multiplexed up to that rate from lower rates. PMC's SONET offerings play in the OC-3 and oc-12 uplink space. If you think a moment, you realize that although you only need so many terabit routers in the backbone, you need thousands, if not millions of lower rate ports worldwide to aggregate all the data and uplink it to the core backbone.

PMC sells various chips that go into FE/GE switches, ADMs, terminal muxes, dccs and ATM switches with Sonet interfaces. Sonet is a four level protocol stack (photonics, section, line and path) and PMC addresses most if not all of these levels.

I also believe a major portion of their current R&D is focused on advanced SONET/POS chips.

AMCC competes much more directly with VTSS than PMC. If you're looking to cause trouble through AMCC, go to the VTSS thread. Since I own VTSS as well, I'll see you there.
