Ever see a Walmart commercial? The worlds #1 retailer has much of their marketing geared toward the "falling price with time" philosophy (I'm picturing the falling numbers). If this concept is taken on by E-commerce in the auction business, BID.COM will be sitting majestically at the top!

My source tells me the same thing... the same source also tells me they have begun aggressively marketing the Michael Jordan card in the US. Q1 and Q2 might be very interesting.

Also, saw in the NP today that Computer Literacy, which has been around for quite some time (IT professionals know about it, it is on-line shopping for tech books, training, etc.), but has yet to make a profit, changed their name to Fatbrain.com (FATB) and saw an immediate and significant increase in stock value. In the last three days, it has gone up 82%.

But in a market that penalizes companies for progressing beyond a money-losing concept, delayed profitability is probably a good thing." (my italics)

Disclaimer: I am not in any way discounting the fundamentals, a company has to make money at some point. But, in comparing apples to apples, we must remember that although Amazon started in 1995, it also has yet to post a profit. Much of Bid.Com's revenues were spent in marketing and advertising, and according to the G&M article about their F1998 earnings, it should drop to less than $5M in 1999 from $12.6M.

Also about FATB: "So far, the firm's market cap is 10 times its sales and it loses about 50¢ (US) for every $1 of revenue. But that hasn't stopped investors, who have been quick to climb aboard the Internet firm with a catchy name."

Hmm, will investors find Bid.Com to be a catchy name?
