Boeing makes U.S. military cut-price C-17 offer

WASHINGTON, March 31 (Reuters) - Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA -
news) had offered the Pentagon 60 further C-17 heavy transport planes at a ''drastically reduced price,'' a company spokesman said Wednesday.

Boeing's offer comes as the U.S. military considers what aircraft it needs to send and support troops in possibly two simultaneous major conflicts in any region of the world.

''We're giving our best cost figure to put it into the mix so they can make the best decision,'' said Boeing spokesman Doug Kennett. Price and other details of the offer are due to be released publicly on Thursday.

Boeing is nearly halfway through an existing contract to supply 120 of the C-17s to the U.S. Air Force. The giant high-winged four-engined plane can carry the M1 Abrams tank in its hold and land in just 3,000 ft (914 meters)."
