FezKoprucu, Hi! This is an interesting debate regarding the future of the I/O in servers. It is important as the current PCI is reaching its limits. The goal is to move up the computer food chain with more powerful Intel based servers but a new I/O is required.

Compaq, HWP, & IBM have been pushing their design because they want a design that is not available as a standard from Intel. They fear standards for this design in general and DELL in particular. You & I as well as these 3 know what DELL has done to them first in PC's, then entry level servers (read Mickie's book!), and now storage. Intel's chief, Craig Barrett, has made comments about how this spec is an attempt to block out DELL.

This is one of the strokes of genious on DELL's part regarding the new technology agreement with IBM. I believe DELL will have access to this technology due to this agreement. Compaq & HWP must be furious with IBM regarding this development. This was one of their few remaining chances to have a product with high protected margins. This apparently will not be the case.

I have been concerned as to how DELL would respond to this Future I/O situation. DELL responded beautifully.

Best,

Duncan
