The problem with broadband wireless to the residential household at frequencies above 2 GHz is relatively straight-forward, line of sight limitations.

If one architects the system with a centrally located transmitter broadcasting with high power, the best case LOS number I've seen for the most propagation friendly environments is no more 60%. The capacity of the system is severely constrained forcing a cellularization of the RF plan rather rapidly.

In contrast, if one starts with a cellular architecture off the bat (low height and power), the studies I've seen show that a typical standalone cell will be able to hit only 20% of the residences in its coverage area with LOS. This forces a RF design with almost 100% overlap between adjacent cells which dramatically drives up the initial deployment cost and hence the penetration required for break-even.

The only other point I would make is that, IMO, using "unlicensed" spectrum for commercial services is a crap shoot. #reply-7702921
