Huge block trades usually signal someone wants out or someone wants in. Volume in and of itself isn't a very good measure (particularly around the end of the quarter), it needs to be in conjunction with price. I doubt Jefferies would hold 1MM shares of BS and is more likely a conduit between two parties. Take a look at the XYLN chart before it got taken out by ALA. Rising volume and rising prices. That signals a change toward higher prices (in general).

Yes brokerage firms they do profit from being Market Makers, but it comes more out of the spreads vs. taking positions in the stock. Market Makers like to be even at the end of the day. Their trading desks are the ones taking positions. Supposedly they don't talk. ;-)

I'd say that you want to screen for block trades or abnormal volume as a confirmation of trend vs. a preliminary screen.
