Hi !

Agreed on SUNW. I also think it is an emerging gorilla also....

I have just finished the book, and I think it fits the profile...

1- proprietary architecture... Sparc, Solaris, Java.
2- Now the pre-eminent UNIX vendor out there.
gaining server market share and "mind share"
3- Java/Jini initiatives have potential of setting up a COMPLEMENTARY OS to windows in the set-top and device space.

4- very strong in e-commerce now, with the AOL/Netscape deal.
5- marketing program a success on possibly the scale of "Intel Inside"
The dot in dot-com.... brilliant.
6- seen as a premier, if not the premier INTERNET company, like cisco, so it could reach cisco-like valuations...
60+ PE, 20%+ growth in sales, probably profits too, for 5 or more years
5- Unfortunately based a lot on execution, so at least a KING right now.

Questions:

Can it be touched in Servers ? No, has not happened yet, it's actually gaining fast and consolidating the fragmented UNIX market.

Can it be touched in Java/Jini... ? No it owns it, and will license it.

Who are it's competitors ?

1- Microsoft in software --> losing momentum against Solaris, gaining on Java, losing on the MSN vs aol, gaining on netscape.

2- Intel in chips --> possibly a weekness here, but when MERCED comes along, Solaris is already ported to it. I think that SPARC should be abandonned, and X86/Merced fully adopted. still no vulnerability here.

3- Unix vendors...

SCO .... dead
Unixware..... dead
AIX/IBM...... weakened, dying due to IBM incompetence.
HP/UX........ very strong, but lost some ground due to HP
NT adoption, and lack of focus on sales of unix boxes.
DEC/Compaq.... A joke, dec already being a dead carcass, and compaq
not really commited to unix, and distracted by PC problems, dealer network problems and NT.

All, in all, a very weakened bunch of "monkeys" or "chimps" trying to take on what is widely seen now in IT shops as the premier "Internet" company, apart of course for Cisco.

What do you ALL think ??

Emerging gorilla, or already there, crossing the chasm and entering Hypergrowth ?

Let me know if I need to re-read the book <smile>

Take care
Jean
