This could be very big. Getting a foothold into the Chinese market is not easy. The PC companies are trying very hard. If T can do this ahead of the other telcom's it should be a good source of revenue for years to come.

AT&T to provide telecom services in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, March 31 (Reuters) - U.S. telecommunications giant AT&T signed an agreement on Wednesday to provide services in Shanghai's development area of Pudong.

''We've agreed to organise a joint venture to deliver advanced value added services in Pudong,'' said an AT&T official who asked not to be identified.

''This includes broad band Internet protocol,'' he said without elaboration.

He said the company would first conduct a feasibility study and further negotiations would be necessary before putting a value on the deal.

The joint venture will be with the Shanghai Post and Telecommunications Adminstration and the Shanghai Information Investment Inc.

The Chinese partners said in a statement the agreement marked a major breakthough for China's telecommunications industry, which has given only limited opportunities to foreign companies.
