TI to invest $424 mln on Japan chip plant - Nikkei

March 31, 1999 04:22 PM
NEW YORK, March 31 (Reuters) - U.S. semiconductor giant Texas Instruments Inc. TXN will refurbish its semiconductor facility in Japan, turning it into a system chip plant with monthly capacity of 20 million units, the highest in the world, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) reported on Wednesday.

Nikkei's Thursday edition, citing company sources, said the 50 billion yen ($424 million) project that starts this year, is the U.S. company's first major capital investment in Japan in 15 years.

The sources said that TI plans to put 20 to 30 percent of its planned annual consolidated investment of just over $1 billion into Japan over the coming years, Nikkei reported.

A Texas Instrument representative was not able to comment immediately.

Look like TXN should sell MU stock but I wonder about tax consequences for earnings.

I've heard TXN will have decent earnings.
