''Gold lending takes place in a relatively narrow market. In order not to
disrupt prices, the National Bank conducts it cautiously and lends only a
modest part of its gold holdings,'' it added in an advance copy of its
annual report.

''Its partners are first-class domestic and foreign banks and securities
houses,'' it said.

For its end-1998 balance sheet, the SNB listed 11,045.5 million Swiss
francs in gold, down 402.7 million from the end of 1997 as a result of
lending operations. It had 2,228.2 tonnes of gold bars and 175.2 tonnes
of gold coins.

It listed another 884.6 million francs as claims against gold transactions,
up from 458.3 million at the end of 1997.
