Sam,

I agree that dial-tone quality is the most important thing, however, (IMO), the UI has to be more than adequate. It has to be extremely simple to use so that your new users aren't scared to use it. Also, some level of snazziness never hurts as that helps when salespeople try to demo the site potential billers.

I have a philosophy that I try to follow when designing a new UI. Keep the simple things simple, yet make the complicated things possible (I stole this from somewhere, but I don't remember from whom). Given the current UI, here are my remarks:

1) the UI has a 1996 web feel to it; that is when frames and animated icons became popular; need to take advantage of newer web technology when newer browsers are used
2) the current UI doesn't seem to scale well to a large number of bill presenters; the current listbox of e-bill providers is okay, but imagine what that will be like when its filled with 100 names
3) need integration with Quicken99 and MSMoney (ugggh!!!)
4) an issue with usability; how will things look after you've paid 100 bills? Will you be able to sort by payee, by payment date, will you be able to select a group of them to perform some group action, such as delete or export into a data file???

Now, of course, the CKFR engineers are under design constraints that we don't know the details of (different browser support, integrating with Quicken/MS Money, ...), so the above remarks may or may not hold water.

Just some thoughts to start off the day with...
