Phoenix--Mar 30--The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) should
oversee the central bank gold lending market, said Terry Smeeton, non-
executive director of Standard Bank London Ltd. Smeeton was head of the
foreign exchange division, Bank of England, until his retirement in April
1998. "I would propose that this role should fall to the BIS and it would
be an appropriate issue for the new Financial Stability Forum proposed at
last months G7 meeting," he said, speaking at the Gold and Silver Institute
annual meeting here. By Melanie Lovatt, Bridge News, Story .23408

Phoenix, Ariz.-Mar 30-The London Bullion Market Association has
reservations over both confidentiality and delivery issues for the London
Metal Exchanges new silver contract, said Chris Elston, the LBMAs chief
executive. "We will have difficulty living with the potential breach of
customer confidentiality that would be involved in any requirement to
report (over-the-counter) contracts or positions to the LME," he said at a
Gold and Silver Institute annual meeting here today. By Melanie Lovatt,

Phoenix, Ariz.-Mar 30-Demand for gold and silver in India this year is
expected to be relatively good, said Chris Elston, chief executive of the
London Bullion Market Association. Speaking at the Gold and Silver
Institute conference here, he said that the outlook for agriculture is
positive this year. "As long as the rupee doesnt collapse and there is no
reason to suggest it will, there will be disposable income available for
gold and silver," he said. By Melanie Lovatt, Bridge News, Story .27178
