Tom C: AMAT has the beta power to give your widow friend a heart attack. If she is looking at the stock and worrying, she should take the money and run. It is that simple. But tell her not to kick herself and you if and when it goes higher. I think AMAT has downside to $50 here and upside to $100 plus with plenty of volatility along the way over the next year. I believe AMAT will report a very nice upcoming quarter. However, these stocks are notoriously hard to predict as far as pricing is concerned. They tend to make fools out of the best of market followers.

I agree with Justa's post on the subject. You might want to tell her to sell half of her holding, thereby recovering her entire cost. That will allow her to rest easier. Let the rest ride.
