Dave, All,

Correct me if I'm wrong(haven't read the links) but I think the assertion here is.... since W-CDMA uses an asynchronous signaling scheme. Each channel having an uncorrelated(in time with other channels) synch word that must be decoded and locked to by the receiver, this argument for matched filters is made(quick synchronization, mitigate near/far etc). CDMA-2000 doesn't go in for this asynchronous operation and instead uses a coherent pilot channel and excellent power control. The desirability and superior performance of synchronous operation was addressed in Qualcomm's white paper for 3G.
