RESEARCH ALERT - Wit Capital starts AOL as buy March 31, 1999 10:01 AM NEW YORK, March 31 (Reuters) - Online brokerage Wit Capital said it started America Online Inc. AOL with a buy rating, noting the company's position as the single most dominant force at the consumer level of the Internet market. -- In a research note, Jonathan Cohen, Wit's director of research, and Jordan Rohan, Wit's online media and content analyst, said investors have now recognized America Online as "the Internet's first and largest Blue Chip company." -- "We believe this acceptance could lead to reduced share price volatility compared with the volatility of other Internet issues," the report noted. -- Nonetheless, the report cautioned that investors use limit orders to guarantee a set price when buying and selling AOL stock as a hedge against the stock's current volatility. -- Living up to its reputation, America Online stock shot up $7.37 to $152.12 in early composite U.S. stock exchange trading Wednesday. -- The stock appeared to shake off concerns raised by a Wall Street Journal article Wednesday that described the potential threat to AOL's earnings results if AOL is forced to alter the way it has accounted for its acquistion of Netscape.
