NAPM-CHICAGO: AREA MANUFACTURERS PAY HIGHER PRICES IN MARCH

CHICAGO (MktNews) - Prices area manufacturers pay for material surged in March, recording the largest jump since October 1980, the National Association of Purchasing Management-Chicago reported Wednesday.

The prices paid index jumped above 50 to 52.5 in March from 41.6 in February. A reading below 50 means the economy is contracting while a reading above 50 means the economy is expanding.

The region's inventories slipped in March but still remained above 50.0. The index was 52.9 in March from 54.0 in February.

Production, new orders, order backlog employment and supplier deliveries all rose in March from February. Production rose to 64.1, the highest level since April 1998, from 55.2 in February. New orders rose to 58.2 in March from 53.2 in February and order backlog inched above 50.0 from 47.4. Employment rose to 53.8 from 53.1 in February.

Supplier deliveries rose to 51.3 in March from 50.6 in February.
