Intel SA-1110 Processor, Intel SA-1111 Companion Chip Provide Scalable Solutions for Palm-Size Devices, PC Companions, Smart Phones, Vertical Handheld Applications
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 31, 1999-- Intel Corporation today announced the addition of the Intel® StrongARM®(1) SA-1110 processor and the SA-1111 companion chip to the Intel StrongARM product portfolio.
The Intel SA-1110 processor and SA-1111 companion chip provide increased memory and I/O design flexibility for handheld product manufacturers and complement the performance, power, and cost benefits of the current SA-1100 processor and SA-1101 companion chip.
High Performance & Integration, Low Power

Memory, I/O Versatility
The Intel SA-1110 processor supports SDRAM up to 100 MHz, in addition to EDO RAM, Flash, synchronous Mask ROM, and ROM. Internal wait signals support variable-latency I/O devices, such as graphics controllers, that are used in applications requiring large, high-color and high-resolution screens. USB end point and IrDA interfaces enable either wire or wireless data transfers to a PC for PC synchronization.
The Intel SA-1111 companion chip provides robust I/O support for PC companions and vertical handheld applications with full, on-chip buffering for PCMCIA and compact flash peripherals. It also contains a USB host controller, two PS/2 ports, two pulse width modulators (PWMs), and four additional serial ports for audio and other external devices. The SA-1111 also enables direct memory access (DMA) to SDRAM system memory, reducing SA-1110 processor intervention and increasing I/O performance.
The Intel SA-1110 processor operates at 133 MHz at 1.55 V and at 206 MHz at 1.75 V. The SA-1110 and SA-1111 companion chip are both available in a 256 mini-BGA package.
Robust Tools Boost Market Opportunity
The Intel SA-1110 is compatible with ARM®(1) V4 architecture. Developers of products based on the SA-1110 have access to a large library of ARM-compatible applications and tools, plus an extensive set of operating systems and tool chains, including real-time and interactive development systems. In addition, Intel offers an SA-1110 hardware developer's kit and evaluation platform that manufacturers can utilize as effective tools for developing and testing software.
Availability and Pricing
Samples of the Intel SA-1110 processor will be available in June, while samples of the SA-1111 companion chip will be available in July. Production of both products is scheduled for the end of the third quarter of 1999. In quantities of 10,000, the SA-1110 processor at 206 MHz is priced at $28 and the SA-1111 companion chip is priced at $15.
