Jock, OTOT, Microsoft: not being a software guy, which Bill could tell you, I can't comment very well on your premise about Microsoft's monopoly possibly being threatened. Still, Linux is making some inroads, but I don't know how serious they are. Linux support, besides Red Hat, amazingly, is "free" because of the internet. Here, about 50 PCs in development areas use Linux instead of Windows of any variety. When a user sees a problem, he can contact a sys admin group who puts out a problem type report to a Linux support group on the web, or does it himself. Generally, an answer for a fix comes back within the day. And, it's truly 24X7. I'd heard of this, but now know from experience here that it works.

Again, I have no idea if any of this stuff is of any serious threat to Microsoft. Another disclaimer, I can bluff my way through most hardware questions, but have to defer when it comes to software.

Re: I can't help but wonder if this is not the beginning of the
end for Microsoft's monopoly in the PC market.

You might also have added 'and Intel's too'. Att he beginning of a product, it really needed two 'monopolies' to get the whole industry going. Won't do to have many products and no standards that other people can build around.

But the industry has matured enough that we should start seeing diversifications - from here on, when some of the appls are standardized, we'll see other platforms that can do the job. Nobody will care what's inside, just whether the boxes can do what they bought them for.
