Centuries, by definition, comprise 100 years.

As the first year of the era is year 1 (it would have
been simpler had the first year been named 0 ;) )
the first century was years 1-100, and the 20th is
years 1901-2000.

And I think few people give a damn about Jan 1 2001 - the milennium
purists should call it a lost cause, shut the hell up about it, and
start arguing about something worthwile and important like hunger,
world peace and pollution ;-) ...
