WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. (CBS.MW) -- Merck & Co. is
considering developing an over-the-counter version of its top-selling
Mevacor cholesterol drug.

If it's successful in the move, the new version would be the first such
cholesterol medicine to be available without a prescription, said John
Doorley, a spokesman for Whitehouse Station, N.J.-based Merck
(MRK), the No.1 drug maker in the U.S.

Developing an over-the-counter version of the drug
"would be a strategy to help deal with" its patent
expiring in 2001
