Earlie, you posted to the Michael Burke thread by mistake.

earlie, thanks for the excellent commentary. These "research houses" are pure hype. None of them called the biggest decline in semi sales since 1985 but many on this thread are not surprised by the decline. Their forecasts are nonsense even without a global recession. Forget about recovery in Asia until the world weathers the impending downturn of the US bubble economy. mike

Earlie, thank you for saving the PG rating of this thread. However, I do not think the term "Poppycock Suckers" is obscene. <g>

BTW, what does East Germany have to do with DRAM? (DDR) <g> And just think, some younger readers will not even know what DDR originally stood for while I guarded the Free World against those bums by testing every bawdy house in the Western sector for pretty female spies. MB

Earlie,

why do you single out IDC or dataquest?

What is the difference between the IDC, Dataquest, Slick Willy, BOJ, IMF, Don King, Abbey J Cohen ........

They all want to sheep to behalf in a certain manner most beneficial to their respective agendas. You want the truth? Some famous movie star once said, "You can't handle the truth". <g>

By the way, thanks for advice. I bought a white box from a vendor close to home. Got everything I want and what I have to pay for shipping, he is delivering AND installing.

Earlie,

Dataquest doesn't reveal the source of their sophisticated market models. Amazingly enough, they seem to have messed up on security and I was able to ferret out their forecasting tools.

Earlie, re:<Dataquest/DRAM prices).
Enjoyable post. ;-) And right on.
With respect to their stable pricing of $1.30 per mbit, are you sure they didn't say mBYTE?
You can buy 64 mByte DIMM's for $60.00 quantity one, about $0.12 per mbit. And as you point out, the price per mbit will continue down as chip densities increase.
Kind of like disk drives. It wasn't many years ago that hard disks sold for $10.00+ per mByte. Now they cost pennies per mbyte.
I do think we will see bit growth rate per PC above 50%, (thanks to Microsoft's wildly increasing demand on memory), but cost per mbit will decrease faster. Won't be long before 128 mByte DIMM's are the entry level at $64.00. A doubling of bit growth at
zero cost per incremental mbit. ;-)
Evidence? A year and a half ago I bought a 32 mByte DIMM for $80.00 Now I can get 64mBytes and $20.00 change.
You're right. These guys are screwed up. ;-)
