I don't know the dynamics of the gold market ie who is selling and who is buying. I am aware that Clinton, Camdessus etc want to sell gold to help, as they see it, poor nations but I don't believe it's happened yet. Personally, I think it's wrong and I wrote to Bill Murphy's Congressman to tell him.

However, if there is a deliberate attempt to put the price down then (a) some people are getting a good bargain or (b) some people are damn stupid to keep buying.

Meanwhile the big producers, eg Anglogold, are forward selling as much as they can. Are they also stupid --- or part of a conspiracy --- to do this because forward selling helps to keep POG low? Perhaps someone should tell Anglo (the largest gold miner in the world) to withhold sales. Then POG will rise and all the little companies will be saved from ruin. I find it paradoxical that the very people who keep professing their love for freedom are the very ones who want more control on the gold market. Of course, it's not called control --- interference with the rights of others to do as they please is never called control --- it's called "democracy"! It the "good guy" - "bad guy" approach. What "they" do is bad, what "we" do is good.

You may be interested that, on my own method of assessment of POG against the (best fit) values of the various currencies, I don't find that POG is unduly cheap.

Y2K - Partial List
Of Prominent Computer
Glitches Since 1-1-00
From Jonathan Saturen <jsat@trib.com>
1-22-2000

If you watch Dan Rather on NBC, you're expected to believe that one week of cold weather in the East has driven World oil prices the highest they've ever been in history, and because of more consumption (for a week) that we now have the lowest levels of reserves in 10 years!! I wonder....what happened to all the Y2K stockpiles we were assured existed?

If you look at some countries' purchases in the last quarter of '98 you see ALL KINDS of oil everywhere. Surely we couldn't have used them all up in 3 weeks! What happened to Saudi's promise made back in the 4th quarter of last year to pick up the slack if there were any shortages? This has been one of the mildest Winters on record, yet one week of cold weather weather in the NorthEast has created shortages???

Many Y2K experts said all along you wouldn't begin to see the real effects of Y2K embedded system failures for 3 - 4 weeks. What else could possibly be creating such problems Worldwide? Here in the States since January 1 we have had:

* Over 60 power outages
* Over 15 one million+ gallon sewage spills
* Water main and gas main leaks and breaks are up 20% over last year - and
its a milder Winter this year.
* 14 refineries have had delays, fires, or explosions,
* 16 nuclear reactors were shut down - some are STILL down
* Medicare delays
* Social Security delays
* Lost mail
* UPS problems
* Major phone outages
* Reduced railroad capacity, etc., etc., etc.

The government tried very hard to make people believe Y2K was a one-day
event - and I think that effort has largely succeeded.
