The issue of MTBE in the environment has become a concern for many states...

It looks like the wheels are in motion on this one. A Drinking Water Advisory has been issued, a Blue Ribbon Panel is reviewing, and concerned citizens are demanding its removal from gasoline. A decade ago, many of these same citizens supported legislation requiring the additive, but it's not like this groundwater problem could have been anticipated. Right?
A classic case of unintended consequences.

Why is MtBE a Drinking Water Concern?
A limited number of instances of significant contamination of drinking water with MtBE have occurred due to leaks from underground and above ground petroleum storage tank systems and pipelines. Due to its small molecular size and solubility in water, MtBE moves rapidly into groundwater, faster than do other constituents of gasoline. Public and private wells have been contaminated in this manner...
