Japanese domestic production of DVD players in fiscal 1998 is estimated to have reached 80.08 billion yen, up 91.1 percent from the previous fiscal year. Output of such devices in fiscal 1999 will likely reach 108.1 million yen, up 35 percent. nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com April 1, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Japan's production of optical disc devices in fiscal 1998 is likely to have reached 938.97 billion yen, up 9.6 percent from the previous fiscal year, an industry association said. The sector data, covering such devices as audio CD players, CD-ROMs, minidisc players and DVD players, is from the Optoelectronic Industry and Technology Development Association (OITDA) of Japan. The association conducted research on the domestic production of optical-related devices in fiscal 1998, which ended March 31, 1999. The OITDA projected that the production will reach 1,070.2 billion yen in fiscal 1999, ending March 2000, up 14.0 percent from fiscal 1998 (120.03 yen = US$1). The fiscal 1998 growth rate of production of optical disc devices apparently declined, reflecting a drop in the unit prices of CD-ROMs, audio CD players and other devices, and the shift of manufacturing to other countries. Japan's output of CD-ROMs in fiscal 1998 is estimated at 170.1 billion yen, down 21.3 percent year on year. The OITDA projects that CD-ROM production in fiscal 1999 will fall to 119.2 billion yen, for a year-on-year decline of 29.9 percent. The projected overall recovery track in domestic production for fiscal 1999 is due to anticipated growth in the output of minidisc players and CD-RWs, DVD players and DVD-ROM devices, according to the OITDA. The domestic production of minidisc players in fiscal 1998 is expected to have reached 88.95 billion yen, up 37.3 percent from the previous business year. In fiscal 1999, the figure is expected to reach 131.6 billion yen, up 48 percent. Domestic production of DVD players in fiscal 1998 is estimated to have reached 80.08 billion yen, up 91.1 percent from the previous fiscal year. Output of such devices in fiscal 1999 will likely reach 108.1 million yen, up 35 percent, the industry group also said. (Nikkei Electronics)
