PITTSBURGH, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, an organization founded by Steven Spielberg in 1994 with the mission of preserving first-hand accounts of Holocaust survivors and witnesses, is developing archives and teaching materials to promote tolerance education for generations to come. This was made possible, in part, by contributions from high-technology companies like FORE Systems, a leading global supplier of advanced networking solutions.

The Shoah Foundation has gathered more than 100,000 hours of video testimonies from survivors and eyewitnesses of the Holocaust. Rather than storing those testimonies on videotape, which can degrade in quality over time, The Shoah Foundation chose to digitize the thousands of hours of videotape and store them in a digital video repository, which is accessed by a computer network.

"This is an excellent example of how a high-performance network can be used to deliver real-time audio and video content," said Thomas J. Gill, president and CEO of FORE Systems. "With the digital video repository developed by the Shoah Foundation, the stories of the Holocaust will be preserved forever -- and FORE Systems is honored to contribute to the preservation of such an important historical event."

The network that accesses the video archive uses an advanced network solution from FORE Systems operating over high-speed fiber-optic lines, and is designed to deliver voice and video while maintaining high quality output.

"We greatly appreciate the generosity of FORE Systems and other corporations who have assisted in making this project possible," said Steven Spielberg, Shoah Foundation founder and chairman.

Using the high-speed network from FORE Systems, The Shoah Foundation can provide a valuable historical record of the events of the Holocaust, enabling future generations to learn the lessons of this period in history. Shoah Foundation archivists have worked tirelessly to digitize the videotapes and design a breakthrough digital library system.

Beyond merely preserving the video testimonies, the network also enables easy computerized navigation through thousands of hours of material by keywords, subjects and names.
