Gateway drops MS Office

By Ellen Cresswell
Business
SYDNEY - Gateway has struck a deal to bundle Corel's Office suite with its consumer and small business computers.
Gateway terminated its global OEM agreement with Microsoft two months ago, ceasing to include the Office Small Business edition with its machines.
Drew Sharp, Microsoft's Office product manager, said the companies ended the arrangement early this year and Gateway chose the Corel suite based on price.
A Gateway official said customers would have the option of Microsoft Office for an additional $399.
Michelle Vanzella, Gateway Australia's marketing manager, said the Corel decision would assist Gateway to make inroads to the sub-$US1000 ($1500) PC market, targeted at home and small business users.
Sharp said Office had 90 per cent of the global marketshare in the office suite arena and the small business sector was "extremely important" to Microsoft. The next major upgrade, Office 2000, will be available in June and Sharp hinted that Gateway may revert to the Microsoft agreement once it was released.
