excerpt:WILMINGTON, Del.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 1, 1999--WEBS Index Fund, Inc. (the
''Fund'') announced today that in computing the net asset value of its Malaysia (Free) WEBS Index
Series (AMEX: EWM - news; the ''Malaysia Series''), values denominated in Malaysian ringgits will
be converted into U.S. dollars at an exchange rate of 3.80 Malaysian ringgits per U.S. dollar, which
is the ''official'' exchange rate fixed by Malaysian regulatory authorities in connection with the
Malaysian capital controls imposed in September 1998.

Since October 9, 1998, the net asset values for the Malaysia Series were computed using an
exchange rate of 5.07 ringgits per U.S. dollar.
