Microsoft Seeking Music for Internet Software, WSJ Reports

Redmond, Washington, April 1 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. aims to have 25 well-known artists turn over unreleased songs or videos for the company to post on Web sites to promote its digital-delivery system, although the company hasn't reached any agreements yet, the Wall Street Journal reported. Microsoft's goal is to secure songs from artists such as Alanis Morissette ahead of the April 13 release of its software for downloading music from the Internet, code-named MS-Audio, although some record executives have expressed security concerns about the software. The company doesn't comment on unannounced products, the paper said, citing Will Poole, Microsoft's senior director of Windows business development.

Microsoft is a member of a standards group called the Secure Digital Music Initiative, which aims to find a uniform way to encrypt and ''watermark'' digital music so it can't be duplicated and distributed by bootleggers. (Eastern edition of WSJ 4/1 B1 www.wsj.com)
