Options Report: Puts, Calls On Sale Before Long Weekend

By Steven M. Sears

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The options market is having a blue light special sale on calls and puts.

Elsewhere in the options market:

- Major institutional trading desks are buying positions in Compaq Computer. The firms are buying large amounts of April 30 and 35 calls, or selling April 32 1/2 puts.

"From what I'm hearing from the buyers, there's a change at the company. They had a good last couple of weeks," a trader at a major New York firm said.

He said Compaq's stock is expected to move higher before earnings are announced toward April's end. He said the trading is not related to Compaq's earnings, which a Compaq trader at the Pacific Exchange said might be the reason for the unusual activity.

"It's a sea change in technology. The worst is over and people are starting to go long," the New York trader said.

Compaq's April 30 calls gained 1/4 to 3 1/4 on volume of 5,492 contracts, compared with open interest of 20,984 contracts. The price of the April 35 call was unchanged at 9/16 on volume of 4,853 contracts, compared with open interest of 37,415 contracts.
