Tellabs Doubles Capacity of Its TITAN(R) 5500 Cross-Connect System Service Providers Can Improve Reliability, Reduce Costs With Titan Enhancements April 5, 1999 09:30 AM LISLE, Ill., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Tellabs today announced a new feature package for its TITAN 5500 system that will make it the largest wideband digital cross-connect on the market. Tellabs' TITAN 5500 Feature Package 6.0 (FP6.0) will double its capacity for carrying data and voice traffic to a maximum of 2,048 DS-3/STS-1 equivalent ports. With scalable growth to 2,048 DS-3/STS-1 equivalent ports, the TITAN 5500 system is the largest wideband digital cross-connect in the communications industry. It gives carriers the ability to transport more than 100 gigabits of data per second or about 688,000 simultaneous Internet calls. The new 2,048-port system enables service providers to improve reliability while reducing equipment and operations costs as they grow their networks. More than 30 representatives of leading service providers visited Tellabs headquarters recently during a trial of FP6.0. "This upgrade will allow us to efficiently service the significant increase of bandwidth in our facilities," said Michael R. Perusse, vice president of network systems engineering for Qwest Communications International Inc. "The new, larger TITAN system will shorten the time necessary to turn up circuits and will help reduce our operational costs." Existing TITAN 5500 systems can be upgraded in-service. This minimizes service providers' capital expenditures and helps them avoid purchasing and operating multiple smaller systems in a single office. A single large system in an office optimizes the use of floor space and consolidates OSS communication links and timing connections. Further, it eliminates the need for tandem ports to connect two smaller systems. Tellabs' TITAN 5500 system is architected to provide users investment protection. With the new "remote port capture" feature in FP6.0, service providers can convert two smaller TITAN 5500 systems into a single, 2,048-port system. Once the two systems are combined, the second system can be re-deployed. Its floor space can be used for new equipment, and the ports used for tandem ties are available for other services. By combining state-of-the-art hardware with centralized management software, the 2,048-port TITAN 5500 system enables the rapid deployment and reconfiguration of telecommunications transport networks containing thousands of elements. FP6.0 is currently available.
