Re: "Suppose you are right. We failed in the past to do the right thing. Does that mean we can't do the right thing now? "

We can do the right thing any time we want to. Today we want to but tomorrow when it's someone else in some third world country we'll ignore them just like we did when it was Africans killing Africans or Cambodians killing Cambodians or Iraqis killing Kurds. This time it's Europeans getting killed so now it's serious! Now we've GOT to do the right thing!

Re: "I do not understand your logic. You must have something else on your mind"

And I don't understand your's either.

Mary

I hope you don't mind my jumping in here. I agree with your characterization of the Balkan mess. I wonder why this is not the opportunity for the Europeans to take charge of their own security issues. It is, after all, not our responsibility. If ground troops have to go in (seems likely), they should be European ground troops.

Hitler may have lost WW2 in the Balkans before he got to Russia.

OT..Mary, I may or may not agree with Elmer but I thought his logic was easy enough to follow. Would it help if he said Rwanda instead of neighbor?

As Clinton put it: Just because you can't do something for everybody doesn't mean you should do nothing for anybody.
The situations are different in eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, etc. Our interests vary in each area. Our ability to make a difference varies in each area. Our actions have to take all this into account in each instance.
