What I know is that there is some serious news out there that niether you nor I know, but a few priveleged ones do. Therefore, when such news is disseminated to the less priveleged, its going to cause an uptick.
Now, as to the speculations on the contents, I assume its related to a major contract signed with MSFT, AOL or TVGIA. It could also be a favorable settlement, but since TVGIA also went up(and SFA/GIC did not move) considerably, that theory is shaky. It could also be a combination of the two above. Another possibility is that there is a buyout offer in the works which would either be a bad possibility(because Gemstar is unlikely to be sold at close to current prices) or it could be a GREAT possibility(where the buyer gives GMST a big premium).
Now a "big premium" is not going to be easy to justify(probably) to the acquiring company's shareholders since GMSTF is a 4B company at these prices.
Sorry about rambling. My bottomline is that I have held for a long long time. I plan to hold on until GMST reaches close to its potential(perhaps $300/share?)..
