Stop loss orders can work well, but sometimes the price of a stock dips unexpectedly and then recovers quickly, which might cause you to sell your stock when you otherwise wouldn't. Some suspect that Market Makers use this trick to buy stock below the asking price (they do set the bid/ask prices after all). Protective Puts are options: even if they come into the money, you can choose not to exercise them.

Good luck!
