At the risk of showing my ignorance, I think a node is a connection point on the internet (or any network for that matter). If you think of the internet as a tree, the IP would be a leaf i.e. an end point where people get on or off. A node is any connection, an IP or even those which only talk to other nodes and don't allow direct access by anyone beyond the administrator. These internal nodes act as the switching points, buffering, and translation points between different operating systems.
