A couple of points Mike,Microsoft has never been successful at something that did not leverage their monopoly on the desktop. Don't forget that Microsoft's monopoly didn't just happen, they created it. I agree that their ability to capitalize on their desktop dominance has resulted in their success but that's the point, no matter how they got there - they got there. But your point about the O/S for a missile etc. is right on. WinCE is not targeted at that stuff - Wind River, Symantec, Metrowerks can all create products for those things - anti-lock braking, there's another one. WinCE is not aimed at those targets. Those targets do not need a human interface. Anywhere that you need to see what's going on - I think is where MSFT is pointing WinCE.and in even more recent history was still saying that the Internet was a fad and that they'd have nothing to do with it. Right on again. As I said before: ask Netscape. MSFT pretty well missed the boat. But when they realized that they were wrong, they simply invaded Netscape's space. MSFT was never even in that space - it wasn't like they were trying to ensure that a competitor didn't steal some of MSFT's share. MSFT wasn't even in the game - but they are now. All I'm saying is that the issue is not simply "which is the better system" , "WinCE is a joke" , "it is inferior to Wind's products". What I'm saying is that "it is not inconceivable that MSFT with its inferior products may continue to leverage its monopoly in the desktop to push its WinCE" - if that happens, it will likely erode share of other established players and ultimately their sales. Hell, I'd agree that Beta is still better than VHS and that the Apple O/S is superior to Windows - but does Bill Gates care? One guy's opinion Bill C.
