I believe that the drop in Wind's share price is due to the perceived entrance of other players into the field. I don't necessarily feel that the drop is justified.

To all,

let us forget about upside for a minute and think about the down side for WIND. Market cap for WIND is a measly $658 million at today's price. I am sure someone would want to buy WIND for such a bargain basement price.

You do realize that with MSFT and all that CE talk, they can simply buy WIND with their petty cash. In fact, MSFT went up over 3 points today. Those 3 points can buy WIND at a 100% premium and still have $1.7 billion left over for incidentals.

>>>To say that the drop in Wind's share
price is due to the percieved entrance of other players into the field is frankly absurd
unless you believe that
Wind's customers will bolt in favor of untested and buggy programs.<<<

If what you say is true the drop is even more disconcerting. The pressure downward has been enormous. It's the relentless nature that is so troublesome.

In the past 28 trading days, only once has WIND closed higher than it's opened. Admittedly it's had a handful of up days, but on all but one, those days were up only because they opened higher than the previous close and didn't drop low enough during the day to completely negate the gain.

It's now testing very weak support (on a closing basis) dating back quite a ways at 16 3/8.

Bob,

CE is not technically as capable as VxWorks. It will not be able to take away any of the traditional RTOS market share from WRS, and neither does Microsoft intend to. Microsoft is going after the consumer electronics market with CE. Wind has to enter this market to grow 40%-50% annually.

But the reality is that VxWorks will never be able to compete against CE. In fact, they are two different animals. CE is an OS with Applications integrated on top of it. And Microsoft hopes that one day CE can be a Windows like OS with many applications on top of it such as Office, Internet Explore, and games. On the other hand, Wind is not trying to build an empire in the consumer electronics market. It is partnering with companies such as FlashPoint and NCI. And for most of the time, softwares built on top of VxWorks are meant for specific products, while CE and its applications are meant to be more generalized so that they can be used for set-tops, PDAs, cellular phone, etc...

Wind and Microsoft are two companies with different visions for the consumer electronics market. Microsoft's biggest weakness is also its biggest strength; it's size, money, man power, and competitive history may just scare system makers such as Sony from getting too close.

The fact that other companies are entering the embedded systems
market is a testament to the future potential of it. Wind commands
about 20-25% of the market at the present time.

I am new here and considering buying WIND, but for those of
us who have not followed this market, there seems to be too
many players and they aren't exactly household names.
It is hard to tell which one has 10% and which
one has 1% (but if the 1% is MSFT, perhaps it deserves notice).

Can you or someone provide an intro for newbies as to who
are the players and who has what marketshare ? (Approximate
would be fine!)
