Carl, almost along the same lines as your paragraph 2 is this post from Raging Bull's "netsapian": (I took this without permission. I looked for a way to ask permission and there was no way to PM) I hope I am forgiven by my motive to increase shareholder value:

Here's an interesting possible twist!

A main reason AT&T spun off Lucent Technologies was because AT&T competitors (mainly the baby bells) didn't want to order from a competitor. So they spun off (IPO'd) Lucent, made a bundle of money in the process, and Lucent stock price more than tripled on its own---and they are now getting mucho orders from the baby bells. So, you have probably guessed what I am going to say next.
Ampex is in the same boat as AT&T was in. The big NEW potential customers of Ampex storage products are also competitors. That is, the Streaming Video companies (which are growing like hotcakes) are all potential customers of Ampex. They will need astronomical storage--but they might be reticent to order from the competition. Well, while we all pictured an IPO in the form of TVonTheWEb or AENTV--perhaps the first to be IPO'd will be the Ampex storage subsidiary---with good timing it could be one heck of an IPO as well. This would give Ampex 'the HOLDING COMPANY', deep pockets to pursue building an Internet Video Network second to none.

Any thoughts on this possible scenario?
