Canada's TSE 300 Best and Worst Performers in 1st Qtr

Toronto, April 1 (Bloomberg) -- BCE Emergis Inc. was the best performer on
Canada's benchmark Toronto Stock Exchange 300 Index for 1999's first quarter,
gaining 146 percent since the beginning of the year. Fracmaster Ltd., a
Canadian oilfield- services company, was the index's worst performer,
slipping 90 percent in the past three months.

Shares of Montreal-based Emergis, which develops ways to transact business
over computer networks, rose after the company was included in the TSE 300
and on profit growth optimism for the electronic commerce sector. ''In
general, e-commerce has been quite an active sector, especially after
Christmas, with projections of three-digit growth rates,'' said Jason
Zandberg, an analyst at Pacific International Securities Inc. in Vancouver.

Shares of Calgary-based Fracmaster plunged after a search for a buyer didn't
turn up any bids, forcing the company to cut 250 jobs, or 25 percent of its
workforce, and seek court protection from creditors.
