Let respond to the portions of your questions that I can. A convertible can be shorted just like a regular bond. It is advantageous to short a bond trading at 30 or 40 than a sub $5 stock because of margin requirements.

As far as the onshore/offshore hedge you'll have to ask someone else, but it sounds plausible.

FYI the thread is about convertible hedging and the advantages of having the market neutral safety with high current income(compared to Money Markets). I appreciate your help reinvigorating this thread. :)
