"dead pixels"?
Your Dell computer should have been delivered with a diskette containing diagnostics. Boot this diskette and there are various tests including video tests and these include sections which will display screens of solid colors. A dead pixel would show up as a black dot in the color screen.

OT: Dead pixels really only apply to LCD screens - not to conventional desktop monitors - to the best of my knowledge...
