<<I have the impression that DST sales are slow because AMPEX is so small>>

That is bound to be on of the things they must work against, Al. Almost wish they had kept that OEM deal with IBM they had years ago. Mighty have been better served with greatly increased revenues, despite the reduced margins. But, all in the past. Here's to the future.

I think there are a lot of things that Ampex could do to improve awareness of the DST. Frankly I wonder how many information managers are even aware of it. If they aren't going to promote it aggressively, why not just sell it to SEG or QNTM, or maybe EMC pr IBM? Better yet, why don't they sell the drives to EMC?

Just curious, but does AXC ever submit the drives to magazines for comparison tests. I can see the headlines "The ultimate backup device: DLT versus DST" or maybe "Is the DST really the Ultimate in High Volume Backup?" Or maybe you flip open the ad for Dirt Cheap Drives and find after the DLT a DST listed at say $20,000 off, with specs for throughput, etc. Then you buzz over to pricewatch.com, select tape drives, and you get choices for Traven, DAT, DLT, and DST. <G>

Would any of these actually sell any DSTs? I don't know. But I do know that if people aren't aware of the DST they definitely won't buy them. If Coach can cost justify a DST, they have to be 1000 other companies than also can - Coach isn't that big a company. Direct sales and partners are both important, but Ampex really needs some publicity, too. The DST should be the standard for high volume backup.

Yep, I see it now, "The Ampex DST, the ultimate in high volume backup" or "... the emerging standard in high volume backup". And I see future press releases ending "Ampex Corporation is a leader in Internet video, and the maker of the DST, the emerging standard in high volume tape backup."
