I said "win a war." The French had taught us everything they knew at Dien Bien Phu -- if you really want to lose, camp in the shadow of commanding heights and get mortared in. We learned it at Khe Sanh. In my opinion, we lost in Viet Nam because of inadequate political and military leadership, not ignorance of culture and history or lack of sufficient force dominance. We violated almost every Clausewitzian or Leavenworth principle of war (does not include cultural literacy). Such knowledge is not a sufficient conditition for victory (as Southerners learned in 1865), nor is it necessary (as the Union learned at the same time as in every other war it fought and won).
