I think when the MM have stock on hand in their inventory
they are probably not interested in buying more so they
lower the bid price to discourage any sellers at times of low volume. Conversely, I expect when you see the spread move closer to the ask (as opposed to the ask moving down closer to the bid) it is IMO they are running
low on available stock.
JMHO, but then again I could be wrong. I thought I was wrong once, but it turned out I was just mistaken
